Wicked has made its return to Nashville’s TPAC and it’s a show you shouldn’t miss, no matter how many times you’ve seen it! There are only a few shows left so get your tickets now to this magical musical.
If you’re not familiar with the premise, the Broadway hit tells the story of Oz from a different perspective. “Long before Dorothy arrives, there is a young woman, born with emerald-green skin — smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships… until the world decides to call one ‘good,’ and the other one ‘wicked.'” This show will steal your heart time and time again and this experience at TPAC was no different.
If you’re a fan of The Wizard of Oz, you’ll notice lots of “Easter eggs.” These are so perfectly placed that they are nostalgic while still breathing new life into the story. It’s one of the reasons we love this production so much, along with the incredible costumes, acting and musical scores.
“One Short Day” was one of the many standouts with thanks to the gorgeous costumery. You’re immediately transported to a different time and place while the set glows simultaneously. This was the best moment of the show visually.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention “Defying Gravity,” which was just as amazing as we hoped! Olivia Valli (pictured above) returned to Oz as Elphaba after previously being an understudy and she crushed that high note that we’ve heard butchered a time or two.
The song that took TikTok by storm was another crowd pleaser, because it’s full of so much comedy. “Popular” was performed by Celia Hottenstein (Glinda) and she stole the show! She balanced nailing near impossible notes while somehow giving perfect comedic delivery… in a pink fluffy dress!
Of course, you can’t have Wicked without a wicked ensemble supporting cast that provided the perfect harmonies. They didn’t miss a single step in the big dance numbers that make this an instant Broadway classic!
