Weezer surprised fans by dropping their covers album on Thursday! Weezer (The Teal Album) includes covers of “No Scrubs,” “Africa,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and more.
During a sold-out amphitheater tour in the summer of 2018, the rock band began adding covers to their set. They started including songs like “Take On Me” by a-ha and “Happy Together” by The Turtles. Their cover of “Africa” by Toto became a massive viral hit which then became a radio sensation when it was officially released.
Since the band had such a good response to their cover songs, they decided to create an album full of covers. They just released it, officially titled Weezer (The Teal Album). Although “Africa” and “Take On Me” were expected, they threw a few real surprises in there (most notably, their cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs”).
Since the release, Twitter has gone crazy talking about the TLC cover and it seems the Internet is torn. For every tweet about someone loving the version, there are five angry TLC superfans. As both a TLC and a Weezer fan, I can appreciate it. It’s ironic. It’s funny and it’s good. Don’t take them too seriously.
Other standouts on this album include “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” “Paranoid” and “Billie Jean.” To be honest, the entire 10 tracks are pretty great.
Don’t worry if you don’t like the covers, Weezer isn’t becoming a cover band. They’ll release Weezer (The Black Album), a new album of original songs, on March 1. TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek produced the record and this is their first collaboration. The songs were entirely written on piano by frontman Rivers Cuomo for the first time in Weezer catalog.
Weezer will also return to the road with Pixies this spring. They’ll embark on a run of highly-anticipated North American tour dates. There’s no Nashville date on the list but they will play Memphis on March 22. A full list of tour dates are here.
