‘Waitress’ Serves Slice of Musical Goodness at Nashville’s TPAC

“Waitress” is here in Nashville at TPAC through June 10 and we got to see it on opening night. If you’re looking for a sweet treat, this is it.

“Waitress” features Sara Bareilles‘ music and lyrics, the book by Jessie Nelson and is based upon the motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly. It’s a girl-power play that reminds us it’s never too late to chase your dreams or become more than just slightly happy.

Although the show has deep undertones of domestic abuse, familial relationships and affairs, it’s a light-hearted tale. Jenna (played by Desi Oakley) is the play’s lead, a brilliant baker who creates an impressive pie each day. Whether it’s the “Betrayed by my Eggs” pie or the “Deep Dish Bacon Blueberry” pie, patrons visit her for at Joe’s Pie Diner for a slice of the good stuff.

At the diner, during a trying time, Jenna is surrounded by her work BFFs — the quirky Dawn and the witty Becky. The three musketeers each tell their own stories of infidelity, love and pregnancy. Although vastly different, they each have one thing in common: they don’t feel like they’re seen and heard by the men in their lives.

We don’t want to give too much away about “Waitress,” but we will say it’s our favorite production thus far. The character development is so strong and each actor is so talented, they each constantly steal the show. This is a must-see.

“Waitress” runs at Nashville’s TPAC through June 10. Tickets and more information is available through TPAC’s official website. While you’re there, be sure to pick up a mini Goo Goo Cluster pie in a jar! It’s the perfect dessert for the “Waitress” main course.

Want to know what else is coming to TPAC? We have the impressive 2018 – 2019 TPAC lineup here.
