Six words: Tim and Faith together in concert. That’s all fans needed to hear before completely filling Bridgestone Arena Saturday night. As part of their 2017 Soul2Soul Tour, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill performed an impressive two-hour set for Nashville fans, wrapping up their two-day hometown visit.
The country music couple had their work cut out for them from the start. It was unexpectedly announced that their scheduled opener, Andra Day, was ill. And though fans were faced with an additional wait time, the second the countdown began, fans sprung to their feet chanting the numbers in unison.
They emerged from beneath the stage and greeted their ever-so-inviting audience with a cover of Aretha Franklin and George Michael’s “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me).” From that moment on, the stage (and the hearts of fans), belonged to country music’s most beloved couple.
After their intro, McGraw and Hill took turns singing a track then handing the mic off to the other. A spunky performance of McGraw’s 1995 hit “I Like It, I Love It,” left fans wanting “some more of it.” And that’s just what they got with Hill’s “The Way You Love Me.”
“This is for all my ladies in the house tonight,” Hill said just before taking the stage as a solo act, which began with a performance of “Free.” Eager to perform after a doctor-ordered vocal rest and one Nashville show, Hill proved more than rested. She kept the energy high through “This Kiss,” “Breathe,” “Wild One,” “Stronger” and “Piece of My Heart.” Fans couldn’t help but catch Hill’s infectious uplifting spirit, which led to sing-alongs and a whole lot of fun.
After her six-track solo set, Hill took a backseat to her husband. McGraw’s solo included performances of “Angry All the Time,” “One of Those Nights,” “Real Good Man,” “Where the Green Grass Grows,” “Shotgun Rider,” “Humble and Kind” and “Live Like You Were Dying.” For the most part, McGraw maintained a stripped-down presence and let his vocals do most of the talking — a tactic appreciated by fans.
As McGraw’s solo ended, Hill re-joined him onstage to sing the couple’s newest duet, “Speak to a Girl.”
“I just gotta take a minute with this dress,” McGraw said referring to Hill’s dazzling gold gown. McGraw then joked that the dress would “look better on the floor, but that’s not how you talk to a woman.”
McGraw and Hill wrapped up their two-night stop in Nashville with “It’s Your Love,” “Mississippi Girl,” “Something Like That” and an encore performance of “I Need You.”
Fans who were lucky enough to score the hottest ticket of summer were gifted a treat: a chance to see country music’s hottest couple perform some of their biggest hits. That alone was the memory of a lifetime.
