Taylor Swift premiered her “You Need to Calm Down” video on Monday (June 17) morning. The pop star called on a ton of famous friends to join her in the technicolor visual.
The colorful video is a trailer park party featuring cameos by Ryan Reynolds, Ellen DeGeneres, Laverne Cox, Ciara, RuPaul, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Adam Lambert, Hayley Kiyoko, Adam Rippon and the Queer Eye Fab Five. The most surprising cameo, though, is Katy Perry. It seems they really have made amends.
In the video, Perry is dressed as a hamburger while Swift is donning a french fry costume. The two appear sad without each other but when they reunite, they take a moment to slow dance and hug it out. Perry posted about the appearance on social media writing, “This meat is BEEF-free.”
The video is full of pride and pretty fabulous. Fans can’t actually seem to calm down since they’ve seen it — and neither can the 29-year-old.
Although we are loving the vivid imagery, the celebrities and the message behind this song, the most important part of the video comes at the very end. With a pink background and yellow text the video reads, “Let’s show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly treat all of our citizens equally.” She then asks fans to sign her “petition for Senate support of the equality act.” If you’re interested in learning more about that petition or signing it, you can do so here.
The video comes just days after Swift unveiled the single and album title and cover. She took to Instagram live on June 13 to tell her fans the details personally. She then released the single the following day.
