After Shakey Graves at The Basement East, I made my way over to The 5 Spot for Suzie Chism, and she was exactly what I was hoping for.
I caught most of her AmericanaFest set, with her husband Rickard Johansson accompanying her, and was dazzled by Suzie’s badass sound as always. She also treated the crowd to a couple of new songs she’s been working on, which we very much loved. So if you aren’t already following Chism, this is your reminder to do that now.
And then she gave us some pretty big news!
Suzie announced from the stage that she is, in her words, “pregnant as f***.” She joked that she was finding herself out of breath in some new places in her music, which made a whole lot more sense once she shared the news. It was a very Suzie way to make a major life announcement, and the crowd was clearly thrilled for her.
She also looked fantastic while doing it. Her vintage outfit was gorgeous, and I was particularly obsessed with the sparkly wedding shoes she wore for the set.
She closed the night with “My Bar,” her song about The 5 Spot, which felt like the perfect choice for the occasion. And then, after giving us one last song, Suzie hopped offstage and left those sparkly wedding shoes behind.
Honestly, I don’t know what was better: the new songs, the big news, or the sparkly shoes left behind. Either way, I’m very glad I made it to The 5 Spot and look forward to her new music.
