This is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson recently stopped by Sirius XM to chat with Sway Calloway. She opened up about portraying adult Blue Ivy in Jay-Z‘s “Family Feud” video.
While on Sway in the Morning, Watson opened up about how it all came about. Apparently, she got a phone call from director Ava DuVernay who called it a “super secret project.”
“It was my first time speaking with Ava on the phone so… I said yes from the time I picked up the phone. Then, she told me about the project,” Watson gushed. “But she had this concept and she said that he (Jay-Z) said to her, ‘Whatever you wanna do.'”
“She just had this whole concept of starting their family history and taking it like 3-400 years in the future… She said, ‘I want you to play Blue Ivy’ and I said, ‘Yeah. Yeah, I’ll do it.'”
It wasn’t until then that DuVernay told her about Blue Ivy’s role in this future world. “She said, ‘She’s the president and she has a female cabinet and you guys are making amendments to the constitution. I said, ‘I’m here for it.’ It was very powerful, which she is, and it had a big impact.”
“Family Feud” is a video full of powerful people and it may be Jay-Z’s best visual yet. In the clip, you’ll see Jessica Chastain, America Ferreria, Brie Larson, Niecy Nash, Rosario Dawson and more. Beyonce and Blue Ivy also appear in the visual.
