Sufjan Stevens performed his song, “Mystery of Love,” during the 2018 Oscars with St. Vincent, Moses Sumney, Nickel Creek’s Chris Thile, multi-instrumentalist Casey Foubert, and drummer James McAlister. Although it was simple, the performance was beautiful.
“Mystery of Love” is Stevens’ track from Call Me By Your Name, the Oscar-nominated film. The song was nominated for Best Original Song and it was both written and performed by Stevens.
When the 2018 Oscars camera cut to the stage, Sufjan and his talented crew rose from a platform under the stage. Together they all stayed true to the song’s original form, not adding anything extra for the award stage. It was a quiet and beautiful rendition of the song from the film. Stevens did look the part of an Oscar nominee, though. He donned a black and purple striped jacket — decorated with dragons.
