Studio Tenn Brings ‘American Idol’ Alums in for ‘Grease’ Production

Studio Tenn‘s production of Grease will include American Idol alums as Danny and Sandy this spring.

From May 10 through May 27, real-life couple Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young will star as Rydell High’s favorite couple. They’re both American Idol alums — both becoming finalists on their respective seasons. They’ve each done so much since their stint on the show, including Broadway appearances. DeGarmo and her husband both co-starred in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Hair, where they met.

DeGarmo is no stranger to the Studio Tenn stage. She’s returning after first playing Dorothy in their 2014/2015 season rendition of The Wizard of Oz. She’s also been a featured artist in their annual fundraising gala, One Night Only. This will, however, be Young’s first time on the Studio Tenn stage. He has performed in Grease before, though. In 2008, Young made his Broadway debut as Kenickie in Grease. Later that year, he joined the show’s national tour as Danny.

“I couldn’t be more ecstatic about working alongside my beautiful, talented wife again,” he gushes. “Not to mention my excitement to be taking the stage in this all-American classic with the ever so talented performers that not only live right here in our hometown but across the country as well.”

DeGarmo is excited about her dream role of playing Sandra Dee and she’s excited about returning to Studio Tenn.

“My childhood self cannot believe that I finally get to live out my Sandra Dee/Grease dream with my Studio Tenn family and friends. My life is always full of such great surprises; I am one lucky girl,” she says before adding,“I am thrilled to once again be working with Matt Logan and his team of creative experts, alongside my fabulously talented Nashville and New York friends. I cherish my past experiences with Studio Tenn and know that Grease will be just as wonderful.”

Most recently, Studio Tenn has added another Idol alum to their production. On Tuesday, the studio announced that powerhouse vocalist Melinda Doolittle would play Teen Angel, a role that she’s very excited to take on.

“I seriously feel like this role was written for me. Always classy, but loads of sass. I can’t wait to get on stage every night and play such an iconic character,” Doolittle says.

Grease runs from May 10 through May 27 at the Jamison Theater in the Factory at Franklin. Tickets are on sale now through Studio Tenn’s website or by calling 615-541-8200.
