Sturgill Simpson is giving us early details on Sound & Fury. The Grammy Award-winner will release both a new album and a Netflix film of the same name this fall.
The album was produced by Simpson and marks his first full-length release since A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. That album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 59th Grammys. In this new record, he merges American rock music with the Japanese animation for the film. There’s a different anime segment for each track.
“We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock ‘n roll record,” he explains. “It’s definitely my most psychedelic. And also my heaviest. had this idea that it’d be really cool to animate some of these songs and we ended up with a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, samurai film.”
The film is an original Japanese anime film he created with some of the genre’s biggest names. Its first trailer was revealed at San Diego’s Comic-Con during a panel with Simpson and two of the filmmakers, writer/director Jumpei Mizusaki and character designer Takashi Okazaki.
