Sept. 17: What to Watch This Weekend

Between movie theaters, VOD, Redbox, Netflix and the rest of the streaming platforms, a lot of content dropped this week. I went through and found some of the best options you can watch this weekend.

Belcourt

The Card Counter

Oscar Isaac stars as a former veteran-turned gambler in Paul Schrader’s latest intense thriller. Although the reviews have been mixed they all highlight Issac’s fantastic performance. The Card Counter is one of my most anticipated movies of the fall.

In Theaters

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Jessica Chastain plays Tammy Faye and some are calling it one of the year’s best performances. She isn’t the only one getting praise, though. Andrew Garfield has been getting rave reviews for his performance as well. This one has awards contender written all over it.

The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain (Also available on VOD)

The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain is an eye-opening true story of the final events that led to the murder of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. This heartbreaking film shows the side of the story no one has seen — until now. I spoke with Frankie Faison, who plays Chamberlain. That interview is dropping later today. Read my full review here.

Cry Macho

Clint Eastwood is directing and starring in his latest film about a rodeo star who takes on a troubled kid and finds himself during the journey. You can also see Cry Macho on HBO Max.

Redbox

The Gateway

The Gateway follows a struggling mom trying to move on until her ex gets out of jail with plans of his own. Taryn Manning and I discussed her supporting role in this film recently. Taegen Burns is also in the movie, working alongside Olivia Munn. She called Munn “sweet” and sang her praises in this new interview.

Netflix

Nightbooks

Netflix: “Scary story fan Alex must tell a spine-tingling tale every night — or stay trapped with his new friend in a wicked witch’s magical apartment forever.”

Prime Video

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

One of my favorite movies of the year is finally out on Prime Video! Everybody’s Talking About Jamie blew me away! Max Harwood gives a star-making performance as Jamie, a kid who realizes he wants to come out as a drag queen at the prom.
