Ryan Hurd has a knack for blending country songwriting with a rock edge, and “Emergency Contact” leans right into that sound while delivering one of his more vulnerable releases yet.

Written by Hurd alongside Brett Tyler and Jimmy Robbins, the song centers on the strange, lingering connection that can remain after a relationship ends. Rather than simply looking back at what went wrong, Hurd gets caught in the uncomfortable space of still knowing someone’s number, still having their name saved. And wondering whether they would actually show up when it mattered.

That idea comes to life through the song’s standout premise: Hurd dreams that he’s been rushed to the hospital, only for the doctors to discover that he doesn’t have an answer when asked who should be called. The fact that an ex is still sitting in his favorites makes the situation even more complicated.

It’s a simple detail, but it hits because it feels real. The lyrics throughout “Emergency Contact” have that same conversational quality, turning an everyday phone contact into a surprisingly emotional reminder of a relationship that no longer exists in the same way.

Musically, the track carries the rock-infused sound Hurd has become known for, giving the vulnerable lyrics some grit rather than allowing them to become overly sentimental. The contrast works: the production feels confident while the story itself is anything but.

“Emergency Contact” is ultimately a song about starting over before you’re completely ready to let go. It’s messy, honest, and relatable — and another strong entry in Hurd’s next chapter of music.

Hurd is currently working on his third studio album, following his July release “Glory.”
