Maren Morris stopped by the SiriusXM Nashville studios to chat about her new song, “Girl,” this week.
Morris chatted with SiriusXM The Highway’s Buzz Brainard about her brand new single. It turns out, when she went in to write the new tune, she had another female on her mind.
“I was just sort of coming into the write that day with… something was on my mind, and I was having trouble getting on the same page with a fellow girl,” she told Brainard. “I was trying to make this song almost like a letter to her, like what would I say to her so we can get on the same track? Because we’re like constantly… competing against each other. I just didn’t like it. I started writing this and I realized I’m not writing this to her, I’m writing this to myself which was a rude awakening.”
Although that was difficult for her to realize, it made the song what it is.
“No one wants to admit to themselves that they’re the problem and I definitely had a come to Jesus moment with myself — a good wake up call. There’s a line in the song where it’s like, “Vanity is my vitamin, I don’t feel the difference.” It’s such a testament to the day and age we live in with social media and you’re watching everyone else’s highlight reel on Instagram and comparing your life to theirs. It’s just BS. Everyone goes through their own struggles and everyone’s fighting a battle of their own. This song, to a girl or a guy, is just saying that no matter what, everyone’s got anxiety right now, but everything’s going to be ok.”
