Saturday (Sept. 28) marks 20 years of Garth Brooks‘ alter ego, Chris Gaines. Country stars like Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Thomas Rhett, Kelsea Ballerini and more reminisce in this video from RADIO.com.
Back on Sept. 28, 1999 Brooks surprised the country music world by creating a side persona and dropping an album. He released Garth Brooks in…the Life of Chris Gaines, which was actually originally intended to be a soundtrack for a movie starring the country legend as a rock star. It was released early, to see how fans felt about the alter ego and music as a whole. The movie never ended up coming out but the music did surprisingly well. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and marked Brooks’ first (and only) appearance on the Top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100 list.
Now, two decades later, country artists are reminiscing on this interesting time in the legend’s career. You’d also be surprised how many younger acts needed a little help remembering who exactly Mr. Gaines was.
