It’s been a long time coming, but Kathy Mattea is finally getting her place in the Grand Ole Opry family. She got the surprise of a lifetime on Saturday night when fellow Opry member and longtime friend Charlie McCoy stopped her mid-song at the Opry.
McCoy cut her speaker and broke the news. She responded, surprised, “Oh…Charlie, you just turned my speaker off!”
“I want to ask you a question,” he said, handing her the roses. “How would you like to be the next member of the Grand Ole Opry?” Mattea responded, “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and thank you,” immediately, and was overcome with emotion.
“Oh my, I’m here to tell you, I will not forget this night. Ever. Ever. Ever,” she gushed.
Mattea will officially be inducted on Oct. 11 during a special two-show night. Tickets are already on sale if you want to be part of the moment.
The party continues on Aug. 26 for Pam Tillis’ 25th anniversary with a lineup that includes Suzy Bogguss, Russell Dickerson, Jamey Johnson, Lorrie Morgan, and more.
