The Hip Hop Nutcracker is coming back to Nashville just in time for the holidays.
The contemporary dance spectacle is set to Tchaikovsky’s music and is coming to Nashville for not one, but two performances. Both performances will happen on Nov. 24 at TPAC.
The dance was produced by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) with executive producer Eva Price. It was co-commissioned by the United Palace of Cultural Arts and features MC Kurtis Blow. He’s one of hip-hop’s founders and he opens the show with a short set before rapping the introduction. It’s a unique holiday experience you can’t get anywhere else.
“We’ve got some of the best dancers in the world performing in a show that is being reimagined in a truly spectacular way,” Blow says. “The creative team has turned this old classic into a new classic, and audiences love this new adaptation everywhere we go.”
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a full-length production that’s directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber. It features all-star dancers, the on-stage DJ and an electric violinist. The music complements the 12 dancers while the transitional music brings a contemporary vibe to the show.
In this production, Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, much like the original. They visit the land of sweets and learn about the holiday season but digital graffiti and visuals transform the play from 19th century Germany to modern day NYC. Through hip-hop culture, the dynamic performers celebrate the magic of the entire holiday season and especially New Year’s Eve, the night for new beginnings.
