Garth Brooks Voluntarily Removes Himself from CMA EOTY Running

Garth Brooks held a virtual press conference on Wednesday (July 29) and he made the announcement no one was expecting.

During the conference, Brooks announced he’d no longer be in the running for future CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year nominations. He’s currently the reigning EOTY and has taken home that trophy seven times.

“This all started…asking the CMA if it was possible, with all the gratitude and love in the world, [if] we could establish some kind of Entertainer of the Year Emeritus and they were very sweet to entertain that thought,” he explains.

The CMA eventually determined that wasn’t possible so Brooks took matters into his own hands. “I humbly ask with all the gratefulness and love in the world that we are going to do this ourselves.” That’s right, he actually removed himself from the category saying he was very competitive and appreciated the nominations but feels like “it’s somebody else’s turn.”

Although he no longer wants to be nominated for Entertainer of the Year, he will accept other nominations. Watch the full press conference below.
