Elizabeth Nichols is quickly proving she’s one of country’s most exciting new voices, and her latest release, “Little Birds,” is further proof she’s got the goods. The cheeky track plays off the phrase “a little bird told me…” and spins it into a clever small-town anthem about gossip, word-of-mouth, and how nothing stays secret for long when everybody knows everybody.
What makes “Little Birds” so fun is Nichols’ delivery. It’s light, witty, and a little mischievous, almost like she’s winking through the lyrics. The production (handled by Travis Heidelman) keeps things breezy, leaning into an easy country groove that feels tailor-made for windows-down drives. Lyrically, it’s sharp in the way early Kacey Musgraves songs were: playful word choices, a little sass, and the kind of relatable storytelling that makes you laugh and nod along.
“Since I moved from Tulsa to Nashville, every week my friends call me and update me about everything going on with exes and friends and what people were saying about me (good and bad),” she explains in a release. “It was like I hadn’t even left, even though I was 800 miles away! It just goes to show, it doesn’t matter where you are or how old you are, people love spilling tea and yapping about other people… but sometimes they forget, the grapevine is much shorter in a small town.”
Nichols co-wrote the track with Heidelman and Feli Ferraro, and the trio clearly tapped into something universal. Whether you’ve lived in a small town or just had your business travel a little too far, the song’s humor hits. “Little Birds” doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s exactly what makes it stick.
