‘Chopped and Screwed’ Documentary to Highlight Legacy of DJ Screw

The following is a press release:

Announced today and slated for release late this year, Chopped and Screwed: The Final Mixtape will explore the history of iconic hip hop DJ and producer DJ Screw by delving into his signature sound, his struggles with police brutality and racism and his impact on contemporary music and culture 20 years after his death.

Executive Produced by Emmy-nominated Joseph Litzinger (Life Below Zero) and Peabody and Emmy Award-winning duo Darby Wheeler and Rodrigo Bascunan (both of Netflix show Hip Hop Evolution) alongside Bruce Kalmick and Isaac Yowman, who also serves as Director, the film gives a first-hand account of Screw’s life from the people closest to the icon and various artists influenced by him today.

In addition to interviews with Lil Keke, Slim Thug, Bun B of UGK, Trae Tha Truth, Nikki Williams (DJ Screw’s longtime girlfriend), D Reck from Wreckshop Records (who also serves as a producer), Mike D of SUC, Big Russ of BigTyme Records and more, the film will also feature DJ Screw’s sister Michelle Wheeler as Consulting Producer, allowing for exclusive access to never-before-seen footage and photos of DJ Screw.

“The idea of telling the story of DJ Screw is just as important today as it was during the time of his passing in 2000,” notes Yowman. “A tale of overcoming the odds, racial injustice and inspiration to many, this film will show the power of a man that prevailed over the adversities that blanketed his community and used his experiences to create a legacy that lives on today. Screw’s impact on Southern culture is no secret, but his influence on music globally is a story untold. With that noted, I feel as a native Houstonian and someone that’s grown up on Screw music, it’s my duty to add color to our culture by making sure his story is well-documented. November 2020 marked the 20th anniversary of his passing and it’s vital this documentary is shared to tell the full story of DJ Screw – the good, the bad, and the will to overcome.”
