Charles Kelley is stepping into a bold new era with Songs for a New Moon, his second solo album. The record is inspired by the ’80s pop sound that Kelley has always loved (if you’ve seen his cover band, you may know what we mean). This is a fresh creative start for Kelley, much like the celestial event it’s named after, where anything goes sonically. Releasing the album independently means Kelley had the freedom to explore.
“A New Moon is the beginning of a new chapter, a new cycle, and that’s what this is to me,” he explains. “I feel like we need a little feel-good music in the world – I need some feel-good music. And I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited because everything feels so different. This is me having fun with no fear.”
We got a taste of the album with two of its tracks, “Can’t Lose You” and “Here With Me.” On the pulsating “Can’t Lose You,” he teamed up with Lindsay Rimes, Josh Kear, and Michael Whitworth. For the song, Kelley found a sound that felt like an epiphany, a perfect match for the deeply personal themes of his journey. “Here With Me” is a reimagining of The Killers’ song as an orchestral power ballad, showing just how far his musical vision stretches.
