Ben Kweller brought a mix of fresh material and beloved classics to The Basement East on Tuesday night (April 16), opening his set with fan-favorite “Thirteen.” While the night had its fun, high-energy moments, it was also deeply emotional, especially when Kweller performed a tribute to his late son, Dorian, that nearly brought the room to tears. The audience was right there with him, fully present for a set that felt as intimate as it was unforgettable.
Just last month, Kweller released his first piece of music since Dorian’s passing, from his forthcoming record, Cover the Mirrors. The song, “Depression,” is Kweller with Coconut Records (see what we thought about “Depression” here). It was great to see that track live during a heartfelt evening. The night served as a reminder of music’s power to heal, connect, and carry memory forward.
Throughout the set, Kweller moved effortlessly between instruments, showing off the kind of raw, multi-talented artistry that’s earned him a devoted following over the years. Is there anything he can’t play? He makes it look easy! If you get the chance to see him live, take it.
