The 2021 Nashville Film Festival kicks off this Thursday (Sept. 30) and highlights more than 150 films from creators worldwide. The festival is both virtual and in-person and, although it’ll be another unique year, it promises to be a good one.
These are my most anticipated moves from the 2021 Nashville Film Festival.
The Humans
The Humans is not just one of my most anticipated films of the festival but actually one of my most anticipated of the year! It’s based on a Tony-winning play and comes from one of my favorite studios, A24.
Plot: “Erik Blake has gathered three generations of his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the group’s deepest fears are laid bare.”
The movie also boasts a star-studded cast, including Steven Yeun, Beanie Feldstein, and Amy Schumer. It’s a dark comedy centered around family with a talented cast! This one promises to end the festival on a high note.
Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road
Last year, the Nashville Film Festival opened its festival with How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, a documentary about the Bee Gees. This year, the festival is kicking it off with a documentary about the co-founder of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson.
As a lifelong fan of the band, I’m looking forward to getting an inside look. I’m hoping they peel back the layers and show us the good, the bad and the ugly. It makes these megastars real and human. I’m anticipating this one not only for the stories but also for the list of musicians that lend their voice to it.
Petite Maman
Petite Maman is the highly-anticipated follow-up to Celine Sciamma’s universally praised Portrait of a Lady on Fire. While I personally didn’t love Portrait, I did love her work behind the camera and what she was able to do with her storytelling. By watching the trailer, you can already tell this will be an emotional viewing.
The Beta Test
The Beta Test debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival with mixed reviews (Jim Cummings films are always divisive when they come out). People tend to either love them or hate them, there is no in between. That’s a big reason why I’m excited to check out The Beta Test.
Murder Podcast
One of the best things about film festivals are the hidden gems! I have an inkling that Murder Podcast will be Nashville Film Festival’s! It’s the feature film debut of William Bagley about two young podcasters who start to investigate a murder in their hometown. This flick is featured in the Graveyard Shift for the film festival and, personally, I can’t wait.
